Calling a plumber usually occurs at one of two points in your daily life. Either you are doing a remodel and need to have new plumbing lines installed, moved, or altered, or you have an emergency and need help right now! Regardless of why you call, there are questions you should ask prior to hiring a plumber. Being a smart consumer ensures you’ll be protected and get the service you want! Here is what A+ Drain Cleaning and Plumbing believes are the three most important questions to ask a plumber before hiring them:
Are You Licensed, Insured, and Bonded?
While this may seem obvious, it’s not always that case! You assume your contractor is licensed, insured and bonded. Ask the question and make sure. Having a license ensures that your plumber adheres to all plumbing code issues and performs work in full compliance with standard practices. This keeps your health and safety at the top of the list! Insurance provides the peace of mind that if they happen to break something during their work and they’re at fault, they’re able to pay for it. And finally, bonded contractors are covered for poor workmanship, items stolen by workers, or paying damages if work is done illegally. Pretty easy to see why these are all important!
Is this a Quote or an Estimate?
Is there is a difference between a quote and an estimate? If you think about the last time you bought a car, did the salesperson say your new cost “estimate” was xx dollars? No, they gave you a firm price. Your plumber should do the same. We’re not saying that there won’t necessarily be a change to the price. You never know what may lie inside the walls or in your crawl space until they’re in there. But, if this occurs, it will be addressed, and you’ll need to approve that cost before the work is done. By working from an estimate, you leave yourself open to higher costs. Get a “quote” for the work to be done, and get it in writing.
Do you have References or Reviews?
If you’re spending money to have significant work done in your home, it’s smart to ask for references. Not only will you know if this contractor has done this type of work before, you’ll get a feel for how their previous customers felt about the results. If you’re not able to speak to their previous customers, there may be a chance that something is wrong, and you should be weary.
